Gumilar holds a PhD in Sociology of the University of Bielefeld, Germany. He was elected Dean of the Faculty of Social and Political Science of University Indonesia in 2002 and Rector for the period 2007 – 2012. He believes that as Rector he can accelerate the transformation of UI towards an outstanding world-class university.
